Annual Conference: Yellowstone Rendezvous

A rare opportunity for immersive nature journaling in America ‘s first national park!  Highly skilled guides and naturalists will lead us in journaling pristine land, wildlife, flowers, thermals, and the caldera of a volcano! In addition, we will go on an early morning guided search for wolves and grizzly bears. Limited spaces available.

Explore Yellowstone National Park with your nature journal in hand! Join Northern Rockies Nature Journaling in the beauty of America’s first national park. We encourage you to engage with nature in one of our country’s most pristine areas.

Experience incredible landscapes and amazing wildlife as we travel into the park in all groups into the park where highly trained guides and Yellowstone Forever naturalists who will provide interpretation and insights not available to the average park visitor.

To customize your Yellowstone experience you will select your field trips of choice for Thursday and Friday which are focused on three areas – A. Lake Yellowstone,  B. Thermal sites,  C. Birds and botany. On Saturday, we will go on a guided search for wolves and grizzly bears.

Nature journalers of all experience levels are invited to attend, however,we are limiting youth to 13 years and older. Small buses will get us where we want to go and there may be short walks on level ground but no strenuous hiking. Activity is rated as easy.

Evenings will be a quiet opportunity to reflect and add to your journal while watching the sunset from the deck of the lodge or by the large, soothing pond at the campus. If a hike is how you relax, there are trails at the base camp for your enjoyment. While relaxing and being refreshed in the evening, a spontaneous tutorial might pop up! 

It is our goal that when you head for home, you are inspired and motivated in your nature journaling practice, will have made new friends and are full of great memories.

Location
Our Rendezvous will be in Gardiner, Montana with our base camp the stunning Yellowstone Forever Overlook Campus just 2-3 miles from the north entrance to the park and the town of Gardiner. https://www.yellowstone.org/experience/overlook-field-campus/.

Schedule highlights
Please plan to arrive at the Overlook Campus at 4 pm or no later than 7pm on Wednesday, June 19, so you can get dinner on your own in Gardiner, settle in your rooms, and be ready for our first evening’s gathering at 7:30 pm. That evening we will have our orientation, meet our naturalists and sign up for field tips. The Rendezvous will conclude on Saturday, June 22, 2024 around noon. A detailed schedule and field trip description will be provided upon registration.

Accommodations

The remote lodges at the Overlook Campus provide stunning views of the landscape. https://www.yellowstone.org/experience/overlook-field-campus/ and calming, comfortable experience in an otherwise rustic environment.

Ours will be the only group using the campus during this time. Both lodges sleep 14 people with three to four per room. Family units of three or four will be roomed together otherwise men will be roomed separately from women.

Each lodge has a full kitchen and living area. Leave breakfast and lunches, food preparation, and dishwashing to the volunteers. You focus on exploring nature. Bed linens, bath towel and wash clothes are provided.

Meals
All breakfasts and field lunches are provided from Thursday, June 20 through Saturday, June 22. Breakfast will be served buffet style in Brown Cabin each morning where there will be ingredients for you to create your own field lunch. Coffee, tea, and water are available. The kitchens are available for you to prepare simple dinners but we invite you to visit the restaurants and food trucks in Gardiner for local foods.

Transportation
Bozeman, MT has the nearest airport. We do not offer transportation form Bozeman to Gardener. The drive is about 90 minutes through majestic Big Sky country. Maps and driving directions will be provided. We encourage attendees to carpool if possible.  NOTE: Registration includes entrance fees into Yellowstone National Park via the buses for the duration of the rendezvous.

Costs

Registration opens February 1, 2024 at northernrockinesnaturejournaling.org  and there are two options.

  • $495.00 includes lodging at the Overlook Campus, all breakfasts and lunches from Thursday through Saturday, field trips into the park, and naturalist instruction. There are no single rooms available.

  • $200.00 for daytrippers who want to attend all the events but provide their own meals and lodging. Limited spaces available.

Refunds
If you cancel prior June 1, your registration fee will be refunded minus a $150.00 cancellation fee. If you cancel after that date, there will be no refunds unless we are able to fill your spot with someone from the waiting list, if so, we will refund your registration fee minus a cancellation fee of $150.00.

Travel Insurance
We suggest all participants purchase travel insurance that includes cancellation and medical evacuation. There are many providers of travel insurance such as Travelguard but it’s best you look around and find a carrier that you are most comfortable with. The cost of coverage varies but it’s usually quite affordable and most policies can protect you financially if you experience illness before departure, cancelled flights, lost baggage, or a medical incident during the event OR if we have to cancel the event due to local emergencies such as wildfire, flood, or global health crises.
